Based on the traditional Hudson Bay and French Biscay axes used by fur trappers and whalers in the 16th- through 18th-century, this North Carolina company has modified its version to further improve the handiness and usability of the axe. Relative to other Hudson Bay models, this axe has a very short eye (where the blade meets the handle) length. This reduces the contact area between the head and handle, which can lead to looseness. The eye has been pierced with a special punch, forming ribs horizontally and vertically within the hole for more contact area and stability between the head to handle joint. The curved hickory wood handle provides a comfortable but secure grip.

Use & Care

As the expert adage says: “a sharp axe is a safe axe.” Axes arrive perfectly sharpened, but will dull with time and use. Maintain sharpness with a flat file followed by a whetstone. View this video from the maker on how to properly sharpen your axe: Sharpening an Axe.

Condition the wood handle with oil if desired.

Production & Design

John Pickett Council began his tool making business in 1886, and the company he began is now managed by the fourth generation of his descendants.

The axes are made by drop forging, which means the hot steel is pounded by a falling hammer into a die, or pattern. An artisan then sharpens the cutting edge of the axe using increasingly fine abrasives. The final touch is stropping, a process in which the blade of the axe is finely polished on a flexible piece of leather.

Handle: 24 inches (61 cm)
Blade: 2 ¾ pounds (1.25 kg)
