Unisex striped shirt in 100% cotton. Ribbed collar, cuffs and hem with side vents. Cut and sewn on original machinery by a family-run factory in operation since 1938. Made in France. (
These breezy, cotton striped shirts are made on original machines from 1940, in the town of Quimper in Brittany, France, the region for which the classic nautical Breton striped shirt was named. The family-run company continues to use the same techniques with which it was first established in 1938.
The ubiquitous striped shirt has a long history, extending back to 1858, when the French government mandated a blue-and-white striped cotton shirt as the uniform for naval forces stationed in Brittany. Each of the original 21 stripes on those first shirts represented Napoleon Bonaparte’s many victories in battle. American visitors to the French Riviera soon adopted the style, bringing it home to the United States. The shirt gained iconic status after the internationally influential Coco Chanel, sold her version in her boutique.
