Caran D'Ache Ecridor Pen Set - Kaufmann Mercantile

Caran D’Ache has been making high-end writing instruments for nearly eight decades. Starting with their invention of the world’s first mechanical clutch pencil, Caran D’Ache is constantly named as one of the most highly regarded manufacturers by professionals, enthusiasts and anyone who still loves handwriting.
All the instruments in the set are made with the same classical design – a hexagonal body and hand-turned, interlocking engraving. The materials will last a few lifetimes. The pens and pencil are made entirely of metal, and are silver-plated and coated in rhodium, a rare noble metal that never tarnishes. All are refillable, so you never have to be the one to put the 7 millionth plastic pen into the sea.
The fountain pen has a stiff stainless steel nib. When used correctly, the nib should not have to be replaced within the owner’s lifetime. Caran D’Ache fountain pens come with a pump filler, but will also take international cartridges. Fountain pens are a unique writing instrument. They require no pressure to get the ink flowing and well-made nibs like these will glide over the paper without splotching, blotting or skipping.
The Caran D’Ache ballpoint pen is one of the most enthusiastically regarded in the industry. It is smudge-free and lasts a long, long time. Each cartridge is enough to fill 600 pages of plain white paper. The stainless steel tip and tungsten-carbide ball make a tough pair, and they deliver a clean, crisp line down to the very end.
Rollerball pens have a tiny-ball-and-socket ink delivery system, similar to the ballpoint, but use a more liquidy water-based ink. This allows for a finer point to the pen, and drops a deep, saturated line of ink.
Mechanical pencils have been Caran D’Ache’s signature writing instrument since its factory first opened in 1924. The company has folded design and technological innovations into its product manufacture as the decades passed, but their mechanical pencils are still trusted as always among the best.

Use & Care

We chose Caran D'Ache's products for their design as much as for their functionality and durability. They are each made with the fewest moving parts possible, so they are even less likely to break. The rhodium coating on the silver means that gleam will never tarnish. And the precision-made, laboratory tested tips and cartridges will all work beautifully by the time they reach your hands.
In other words, you don't have to do anything to maintain Caran D'Ache pens except change the cartridge when the ink (or lead) runs out. Refills for all the pens and the pencil are available from Kaufmann Mercantile.

Production & Design

This line of writing instruments was named after the original Ecridor pencil factory acquired by Caran d'Ache founder, Arnold Schweitzer in 1924. Variations on the design has been made by the company since they first came up with the Ecridor style in 1930.
So beloved is the design of this line of pens and pencils, that in 1947, when very little was being made that wasn't for the war effort, Caran d'Ache Ecridor the Ecridor was selected by the officers of the U.S. Army Headquarters in Germany. Caran d'Ache made an initial run of a thousand pens, before finally going into series production in 1953.
All pens are made entirely at the Caran d'Ache factory in Geneva, Switzerland.
