Castor Chrome Oil Lamp - Kaufmann Mercantile

Canadian design team Castor reimagines the oil lamp as a slim chrome and glass vial supported by a solid cantilevered base. The flame is lit on a cotton wick and protected by a glass cylinder. A matte black powdercoating covers the metal base. The simplified form of this museum-worthy design object can illuminate dinner parties, elevate bedside tables, or transform a study space. Castor collaborated with Canadian light manufacturer Harnisch, drawing upon their upon their 150 years of experience making oil lamps, to realize their vision of this wholly modern light.

Use & Care

When you are ready to use your lamp, unscrew the lid from the chrome body and fill with lamp oil or kerosene, leaving ½ inch of empty space at the top. After placing the wick in the lid, and re-securing the lid to the base, wait at least five minutes before lighting. This allows the wick to thoroughly absorb the oil, prolonging its life. Please note that due to shipping regulations, lighting oil is not included with the lamp.

After lighting the wick, place the glass on the lamp to protect the flame. The length of the wick can be adjusted with the knob on the lamp’s body. Take care to keep the wick short so the flame will not produce excessive soot and smoke. Be sure to keep the wick trimmed after use.

The black chrome finish on the lamp body can be washed with a damp cloth if needed, and a mild detergent can be used to remove any residue from the glass cylinder.
