If you’ve ever inadvertently held your potted plant prisoner in Sahara-like conditions, this self-watering planter is a lifesaver (literally). The specially designed set allows your flowers, herbs and other greenery to draw in moisture as needed – and as they would in nature.

The pot features drainage holes at the bottom that help to aerate the roots and wick away excess water, therefore avoiding dreaded root rot. The lower tray at the bottom is to be filled with water, and acts as a reservoir for the plant to drink in water as necessary. A curved indentation in the upper portion adds interest to the simple, functional design, and also allows for a firm grip when lifting up the pot to refill the lower tray.

These stacked ceramic self-watering planters are made through slip casting, the method of pouring clay into a plaster mold. The upper pot is finished in a matte glaze while the lower portion has a slight sheen to create a subtle play on textures.

Use & Care

Keep reservoir tray filled at all times. The self-watering planter will reduce the amount of watering needed for your plant and create an environment of continuous dampness. For example, a maidenhair fern that requires constant moisture in its soil and typically should be watered everyday will only require watering once or twice a week if the reservoir is kept full.

The best plants for this self-watering planter are those that thrive in moist soil, such as tropical plants and certain vegetables. Succulents and other plants that prefer dry soil can be planted, but they will not require the reservoir to be filled. The lower portion will instead act as a tray to capture excess after watering.
