In 2009, product designers Patrick Bek and Oliver Fowles set out to create a new line of minimal timepieces. “We both loved watches but were unhappy with the pieces available at the time, there were cheaper ‘throw away’ pieces that provided some of the simplicity we were looking for or there were the luxury brands of old,” explains Bek. “We saw that there was an opportunity to design a watch that embodied, character, quality and simplicity in equal measure.” The result was Uniform Wares, which married meticulous design and development with generations of manufacturing expertise. “We like to surprise out of the box and exceed expectations,” Bek relates. “It’s a constant challenge to balance the momentum that’s needed for a for a growing company with a patience that’s needed in design.”
Every watch in the Uniform Wares collection is developed entirely in their London studio and workshop, from initial sketch, to prototype and final design. Their design process is guided by fundamental principles distilling down elements to create distinction and character. After a sketch is finalized, the fully equipped prototyping workshop in the Uniform Wares studio allows the team to produce aesthetic and ergonomic models that are worn and tested for wear resistance, accuracy and water resistance. The design and sample are then sent to Uniform Wares’ production partner in Switzerland and are finally returned to the London studio for final approval and strap fitting.
