Cotton Twill Ball Cap (White) - Kaufmann Mercantile

The baseball cap was first worn by the players of the Excelsior Base Ball Club of Brooklyn and the Knickerbockers of New York in the mid 19th-century. This early version was made of straw, and featured the same visor and button top as today’s ubiquitous style.

Building upon that history, a trio of Brooklyn-based designers created their take on the classic cap, using 100% cotton, solid herringbone fabric with nickel eyelets and adjustable clasp. A buttonhole strap catch gives a crisp, put-together look.

The company employs a small group of skilled craftsman in their workshop, and each maker is responsible for a single batch of goods from start to finish. These ball caps were created exclusively for Kaufmann Mercantile. We sourced a lightweight Japanese herringbone twill fabric and opted for an unlined structure to create the perfect summer cap that looks just as good in the city as at the campsite.

Use & Care

Spot clean with a damp cloth. Steam to remove wrinkles.

Production & Design

The aim of this Brooklyn-based collective is to bring high-quality manufacturing back to New York City and have fun doing it (you’ll find a skate ramp alongside their sewing machine tables). Their combined experience covers design and manufacturing of leather and canvas goods, such as shoes, clothing, bags and other accessories. The company’s mission is exemplified by their actions: they operate out of a 60-year-old factory that was about to go out of business before they took over the space. They strongly believe in quality over quantity, and therefore their goods are created in small batches overseen by one artisan without the use of automated machinery.
