The DeWit dibber is made from Swedish made boron steel, which is roll-forged by hand. The solid steel is then burnished to a black patina finish for a long life of planting seeds.

The handle is made of ash wood from the hills of Slovakia – all  government approved forests to reduce its environmental impact. The wood is durable yet elastic. The top part of the dibber in made from brass to protect the tip from damage, should you hit a rogue root.

The dibber is put together and sharpened by the time-honored traditions of the Dewit family blacksmiths, a five-generation small town Dutch company known for its craftsmanship. Willem de Witt started his gardening tool company on a spring day in 1898, and the tools still have their ancestors’ antique appearance. The same factory, machines, and techniques are used to this day in Kornhorn, a small village near the city of Groningen in the north of Holland.

Use & Care

Simply plunge the pointed end into the earth as deep as you need and drop in seeds, seedlings or bulbs and cover with soil. If making a large hole, swirl the dibber after plunging it into earth.

Clean your dibber with a bit of oil and keep out of the rain.

It's pointy -- so careful not to put an eye out.

All DeWit tools come with a lifetime warranty. If anything should happen to one of your tools, send a photo of the damaged tool to Kaufmann Mercantile and we'll send you a replacement.

Production & Design

The sharp steel on the pointed tip is made from boron, a chemical compound known for it's durable strength. The steel is roll forged in Sweden using a heavy bar to weld the steel into the thickness and length needed. It is then sent to the Dewit family factory, where the blacksmith will sharpen all edges of the point to give it just the right sharpness to easily pierce into even the most stubborn soil.

The top is fitted with brass to keep the tip from getting damaged. It is then assembled into the Forest Stewardship Council-approved ash wood from Slovakia. Different lengths are laser-burned into the wood for varying depths of planting.
