Footed ice cream bowl in shock proof, heat-resistant tempered glass. More than twice as strong and durable as regular glass. Freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. Made in France since 1939. Set of 6 bowls. (
These footed glass ice cream bowls are created in a unique process that makes them two and a half times stronger than conventional glass. In a process similar to creating car windshields, the glass is heated to extremely high temperatures of 1292°F (700°C) and then dramatically and quickly cooled. A chemical reaction occurs that greatly improves resistance against thermal shock and physical impact. This tempering process creates glassware with a higher tolerance against chips, cracks and breakage that may safely be used for hot and cold liquids and foods—the bowl will safely accommodate freezing cold ice cream and piping hot fudge.
Safe for use in freezer, microwave and dishwasher.
Manufactured to withstand sudden temperature extremes from -4°F (-20°C) to 266°F (130°C) and suitable for hot or cold foods.
Established in 1939, Duralex grew to great acclaim as a producer of strong, tempered glass in classic, elegant designs. Their fluted glasses became de rigueur in most French bistros and were standard issue in the country's school cafeterias.
On the fringes of La Chapelle Saint-Mesmin in central France, the company occupies a sprawling factory that houses an oven the size of a city block. Here, Duralex glasses and other tempered glass kitchenware are turned out from a blend of sand, lime and aluminum-oxide. Once cooled, the glass is dropped into freezing water to catalyze the process that fortifies and strengthens the material.
