Made by fourth-generation toolmakers, this engineer’s hammer features a hot forged head that’s treated with a clear lacquer to deter dust and dirt. The American hickory wood is kiln dried and turned, and the handle’s eye section is further dried to below 10% moisture content to provide a secure insertion and fastening into the hammerhead.

Use the sledgehammer to break up tough surfaces or drive stakes deeply into the ground. Strike the hammer against wood, concrete, metal and stone. It is suited for fragmenting large pieces of timber, striking spikes, cold chisel rock drills and hardened nails. Lighter and shorter than a regular sledgehammer, our engineer’s hammer provides more control.

Use & Care

Do not store hickory products outside where they can absorb moisture that will swell and bloat the handle. Keep in a dry environment and condition the wood handle with oil if desired.

Always inspect the tool prior to use – make sure the handle is not loose and that there is no damage to the sledge head. Do not use a hammer that has cracks or depressions in the head – the design of the tool head is precision machined for an exact radius and bevel that is essential for its proper use and safety, and any damage to the head will reduce this specific measurement.

Never strike another hammer with this tool. This could cause severe damage or injury.

Production & Design

The company behind this forged steel and hickory wood handle has been making tools since 1886, and the family-run business is now in its fourth generation.

The tools are made by drop forging, which means that hot steel is pounded by a falling hammer into a die, or pattern. The striking face is then precision machined with proper radius and chamfer (bevel), providing safer performance. The tool head is put through one last heat treatment for maximum depth of hardness. The hickory handle is hydraulically inserted into the hammerhead, using force and vibration to consolidate the two parts, then secured using a serrated aluminum wedge.
