Stainless steel pocket knife with dyed camel bone handle for precision cutting. Brass inlays and rivets. Curved blade with straight spine. Made in Germany by a blade manufacturer in operation since 1840. Also available in Red. (
The design of this small, slim pocketknife is based on tools used by doctors and veterinarians in the 1800s, which typically featured a straight spine with a handle made of bone, stag, mother-of-pearl or ivory. The small, sharp blades were useful for preparing medicines, crushing pills and removing caked medicinal powders from glass vials.
This version, made by a German company in operation since 1840, features camel bone. An indentation in the blade creates a firm, steady grip, making this knife useful for precision cutting. Use for everything from cutting sewing stitches to slicing.
A nail-nick (crescent shaped sliver on blade) makes the blade easy to pull out. Slide blade back into handle when not in use.
Keep sand and grit out of the knife. Keep the mechanisms clean. Clean knife by applying an industrial lubricant or oil and scrubbing crevices with a toothbrush.
Remember to keep your knife sharpened: a dull blade can be more dangerous than a properly maintained one.
Otter-Messer was founded around 1840 in a traditional grinder’s watermill by the Bern family. The company name refers to the indigenous otters that live in the riverbanks and streams of Northern Germany. Even in the age of modern technology and machinery, Otter-Messer continues to hand-make knives according to traditional methods.
