Hand-Forged Brass Tie Clip - Kaufmann Mercantile

This brass tie clip is completely hand-forged in the basement of a formally trained metalsmith. With a BFA in Crafts and Metals from the University of the Art in Philadephia, metalsmith Michael Studebaker forges each clip using just a hammer and an anvil.

The modern design belies the clip's traditional method of making: First, brass rods are heated and cooled to soften the metal to a workable malleability. Michael chooses Alloy 260, or “Cartridge Brass,” which is noted for its outstanding strength—often used in automobiles, industrial hardware and instruments.

Over the course of the hammering and cooling process, the brass becomes hardened again. Each piece is hand-polished to a bright finish, with no plating or coating, so that the piece will age and patina beautifully over time. The surface will evolve with wear, but never deteriorate—this is an item that can be passed down for generations to come.

Use & Care

Brass will gain a unique patina over time. No special care is required.

Production & Design

Formally trained metalsmith Michael Studebaker teamed up with Alyssa Catalano to create Studebaker Metals in early 2014. Their products are minimally polished and never coated or plated—each item celebrates the natural surface of the brass, and is meant to be passed on as an heirloom. The Studebaker method for creating a line of contemporary accessories—ranging from cuff links and necklaces to razors and combs—is rooted in centuries-old techniques, utilizing simply a hammer, an anvil and fire.
