Glass carafe with glass cup – which, when empty, doubles as a top for the vessel. Both pieces individually free-blown, meaning every set is unique. Holds 24 ounces of water. Handmade in Brooklyn. Ships in 2 weeks. (
Glassblower Andrew Hughes created these carafes exclusively for Kaufmann Mercantile based on a prototype he made of his own bedside carafe. First, Andrew gathers glass from a furnace filled with molten material with his blowpipe. He then free-blows the carafe, manipulating the shape while continually reheating the piece in the glory hole – a gas-fired chamber that maintains a material’s working malleability.
Noting the precise measurements of the vessel, Andrew then gathers and blows more glass to create the cup. After the pieces are finished, they cool slowly for eight hours or more in a special, controlled-temperature oven called an annealer.
Each set is completely unique.
Do not place in dishwasher. Hand wash to preserve the longevity of the piece.
Glassblower Andrew Hughes created these unique glass pieces especially for Kaufmann Mercantile. Armed with a degree in glass from Rhode Island School of Design, Andrew began his career as a sculptor’s assistant, finding time on the side to create glass pieces for himself and his friends. Orders started coming in. To keep up with the demand, he became a full-time glassblower and now works out of a studio in Brooklyn, New York.
