Handmade sled with ash wood base, aluminum runners and leather strap. Sturdy construction and hefty weight will zip down snow covered slopes for many seasons of winter fun. Made by a New York craftsman. (
Zip down snow covered slopes on this sturdy handmade sled. Aluminum runners will glide quickly down hill, and the long leather strap makes the sled easy to pull back up to the top for another ride. The hefty base is made out of reclaimed ash wood planks, which are held together with steel bolts. Two nickel-plated buckles on the strap make it adjustable to your height.
This sled was made by innovative craftsman Andrew McAteer, who was inspired by Edith Wharton’s novel Ethan Frome to design a sled that the star-crossed lovers might have used. To come up with the design, he analyzed several turn-of-the-century sled plans, then simplified the construction and design. When a large ash tree near his Connecticut home was felled during a storm, McAteer saved the wood to make useful objects, like these sleds. McAteer is an established leather worker with a studio in New York, and vegetable tans the hides used for each strap himself.
Always sled with caution. If you wish, you may condition the leather strap periodically with neatsfoot oil or wax, such as our Beeswax Leather Conditioner. A damp cloth can be used to clean any dirt off the ash wood base.
