Heat resistant glass tea press with olivewood lid. Modern, streamlined design goes from kitchen to tabletop. Plunge press method creates a full-flavored cup of tea. Can also be used for French press coffee. Made in Japan. (
This glass and stainless steel tea press is made by Hario, a respected Japanese coffee and tea wares company initially founded in 1921 as a provider of glassware for laboratory use. That same industrial glass is used to create this elegant, modernist press that can be used for loose-leaf tea or coarsely ground coffee. The straight lines of the glass body are accented by the generous curvature of the handle, topped off by a lid hewn from olivewood, which is prized for its swirling, variegated grain.
Hand wash is recommended. Only the glass carafe may be placed in the dishwasher. The press should not be placed directly on a stovetop.
To make tea: Remove tea press lid and plunger and place desired amount of loose tea leaves in the cannister. Pour hot water, ideally anywhere from 180-205°F (82-96 °C) into the press, leaving about an inch of room at the top for the lid. Stir tea and water with a non-metal utensil (as metal can break the glass), then replace lid onto the top with the filter and plunger all the way up to retain heat during the steeping process. Time for tea steeping depends on the type of leaves and to desired strength. When your tea is ready, press the filter down slowly.
To make coffee: Remove press lid and place desired amount of ground coffee in the press. Pour water into the carafe, leaving about an inch of room at the top for the lid. Stir coffee and water with a non-metal utensil, then place lid onto the top, with the filter and plunger all the way up.
Allow to brew for 3-5 minutes before pressing the filter down slowly.
Hario was founded in 1921 to provide glassware to laboratories. In the 1940s, founder Hiromu Yasuhiro believed that their heatproof glass would work well for the growing café industry in Japan, and he was right. Today, Hario remains one of the most respected producers of laboratory and tea products. The company is run by the original founder’s son, CEO Sibata Yasuhiro.
