Helen Levi x KM Ceramic Colander - Kaufmann Mercantile

Ceramicist Helen Levi developed this unique colander exclusively for Kaufmann Mercantile. The sizeable holes make the dish ideal for rinsing vegetables and fruit. The graceful contours allow the colander to double as a serving dish for just-washed berries or grapes. It can also act as an attractive holding place for garlic and onions.

A lifetime ceramicist, Levi has been making pots since she was a small girl, when she was enrolled in an after-school pottery course. She continued with the craft through high school and college, and taught many pottery courses over the years. “It’s the most familiar craft I know,” she relates. Levi continues to uses the same clay she first learned to work with, which comes from Pennsylvania. The glazes used for this colander are mixed by a small producer in New Mexico.

To make each colander, Levi throws a measured amount of clay on her wheel, and forms the base by hand. After it has dried for one day, she adds holes and handles. She then allows the colander to dry for several days. When it is thoroughly dried, the colander is bisque fired in a kiln. Then the piece is glazed, fired again, and ready to use.

“My intention was to create a piece that was simple and neutral, with a small added element of interest,” says Levi about the design. “For this colander, it was the hand-built handles.” This feature makes it easy to move the dish right from sink to table. “This colander is perfect for washing and serving strawberries,” notes Levi.
