Illustrated trading cards by the legendary cartoonist Robert Crumb. Printed on heavy card stock and packaged in a gift box. Set of 36. (
Flip through this deck of trading cards and you will find a who’s who of early bluesmen and women, from Memphis Minnie to Barbecue Bob. Each carefully colored drawing has a character all its own, thanks to the distinctive work of illustrator Robert Crumb, who is often dubbed the “father of underground commix.” An accomplished musician himself, Crumb is renowned for his impressive vintage 78 record collection (more than 5,000 at last count).
On the back of each of the 36 cards is a short bio of the artist, written by the historian Stephen Calt, as well as a discography by New York’s Yazoo Records, which first published the set in 1980. A serious aficionado of early blues and jazz, Crumb famously declined requests to illustrate album covers for bands such as The Rolling Stones because of his dislike of loud rock music.
Part of a larger series, including Jazz and Country music trading card editions, the Heroes of the Blues set is a true tribute to the legendary blues men and women. The full color pen and ink portraits are printed on heavy card stock.
