Japanese Cotton Towels - Kaufmann Mercantile

The short width and long length of this gauzy, cotton towel is based on tenugui, traditional Japanese fabrics with a history reaching back to the sophisticated and artful Heian Period (794-1185). The unique, ultra-lightweight weave creates softness and absorbency, making them apt for hand towels in the guest bath or dishcloths in the kitchen. Because of their distinctive dimensions and smooth weave, the towels may also be used for wrapping food or gifts, or even as a scarf. In Japan, tenugui are also popular as head coverings in martial arts or as obi (sash) for kimono.

To produce the towels, delicate threads are slowly woven on old-fashioned, low-speed looms in a factory in Japan that’s been in operation since 1934. The towels are then finished with a thorough laundering, using the wellsprings of underground water from the melted snows of Mount Ishizuchi, the tallest mountain in Western Japan.

Use & Care

Machine wash in cold water using a mild detergent. Hang dry or tumble dry on low or gentle cycle. Do not use bleach.

Production & Design

This Japanese company has been using old-fashioned looms to produce some of the softest towels, home linens and sleepwear available since 1934. The key to the softness of their products is due to the fine, loosely twisted threads that are used. However, their dedication to delicate materials means that high-speed looms and other modern technologies are out of the question, as this machinery would break the fine threads. To create further softness and absorbency, the textiles are laundered with natural detergents such as orange oil using wellspring water from the melted snows of nearby Mount Ishizuchi.
