White palm fiber brush for household and kitchen use. Stiff and dense for scrubbing floors, shoes, or heavy pots and pans. May also be used to clean vegetables. Handmade in Japan since 1903. Comes in Small (2 inches) or Large (4 inches). (
The stiff, dense palm fibers of this multi-purpose brush will stand up to the heaviest-duty of household chores. Scour the bathtub, kitchen sink, floors, or even shoes. The brush can also be used to clean freshly picked carrots from the garden.
The brush is made by a century-old company by the name of Kamenoko Tawashi, Japanese for “turtle scrubber.” Turtles and tortoises are symbols of longevity in Japanese culture. The name refers to the shape of the brushes as well as their long-lasting durability. Unlike plastic scrubbers, the plant fibers of their brushes are naturally biodegradable.
Do not use on coated pans or delicate glassware. Rinse well and keep dry after use.
As a little boy, Seizaemon Nishio created a floor mat for his family home, made out of palm fiber. In 1907, when Mr. Nishio was 32-years-old, he founded Kamenoko Tawashi, focusing on natural palm brushes for the household.
The brushes begin with harvesting, cleaning, and sorting the raw fibers by hand with plants ranging from coconuts, palm, and agave. The fibers are hand-cut to uniform size, then packed and wound against a wire pin. The craftsmen assigned to this job use their long thumbnails to slowly flatten out the fibers. With the aid of a machine, the craftsmen slowly churn and turns the flattened, wire-bound fibers until a long, cylindrical shape emerges. The two ends are then bound together securely using pliers.
