Soft and lightweight cotton scarf with hand-knotted fringe trim. Made in Japan on wooden looms using traditional techniques. Pressed and handpackaged in Portland, Oregon. 72 inches long x 15 inches wide. (
These lightweight, patterned scarves are created in a small, family-run factory in Japan, then pressed and packaged in Portland, Oregon. The Japanese artisans who make these scarves employ traditional weaving techniques on old wooden looms. The light and delicate dashed line pattern pays homage to the history of woven kasuri fabrics, the Japanese version of ikat. To finish the scarves, the ends of the loose threads are tied individually by hand.
Hand wash and dry flat.
Based in Portland, Oregon, and working with fabric sourced in Japan, co-founders and business partners Dawn Yanagihara and Katsu Tanaka seek to create long-lasting, heirloom items from kasuri kimono fabrics as an alternative to temporary, fleeting fashions.
Kasuri, derived from the Japanese verb kasuru (meaning “to touch lightly”), is notable for the blurred woven patterns formed by light, airy threads. The fabrics used by Dawn and Katsu to create their scarves, bandanas, quilts, bags, ties, hats and more, are either vintage Japanese stock or newly made on original looms by small, family-run factories in Japan. Scraps of the unused fabric are then saved to create one-of-a-kind, patched-together quilts.
