Three-thread pure cotton sweatshirt with flat knit cuffs and hem.
Triangle inset at base of sleeve for comfort and ease of movement. Woven on century-old knitting machines in Germany. (
This three-thread pure cotton sweatshirt by Merz b. Schwanen features a fluid, seamless design, which is made using a loopwheel process to create one single shirt body without the need for side seams. It's woven on circular knitting machines dating back to the 1920s and based on a pattern from the 1930s. A unique panel on the underside of the arm creates a pocket for ventilation, as well as providing extra comfort and ease of movement. A classic piece whether worn for a jog, lounging at home or running errands.
Machine wash cold. Tumble dry on low setting.
In 2009, Peter Plotnicki, a former menswear tailor and vintage fashion aficionado, purchased some Merz beim Schwanen deadstock at a flea market. He was impressed with the quality but unfamiliar with the brand itself. Peter's research traced the company back to 1911, when Balthasar Merz founded a small German Alps knitwear operation that was family-run until 2007.
With permission from the Merz family to use the brand name, Plotnicki resurrected the line of German-style underwear and undershirts, with a keenness for authenticity. The garments are made on original circular knitting machines dating to the 1920s, and everything—including the trim fabrics, buttons, hangtags and packaging—is made on German soil.
