Handmade quilt with minimalist design inspired by modern art and the canvases of Mark Rothko. Pattern is a geometric composition of tan, light pink, white, black and bright orange. Made in Minnesota. (
Inspired by the canvases of complex color blocks that Mark Rothko painted, this quilt will become a useful work of art when you cozy up under it on the couch or spread it over a well-made bed after a good night’s sleep.
The quilt is created by Louise Gray, a collaboration between friends Alexandra Gray Bennett and Jocelin Johnson. Bennett, who had grown up quilting, found an ideal creative partner in Johnson, who helped re-imagine the quilt as a modern compositional canvas. In December 2014, the pair founded Louise Grey together.
After each quilt is designed by Bennett and Johnson, it is sent to a family-run textile shop in Minnesota. The small staff of 10 stitches each quilt together, carefully guiding the pieces by hand through their sewing machines.
“We wanted to bring a new modern aesthetic to quilting, which has this traditional aesthetic with a lot of piece work,” says designer Jocelin Johnson. “We wanted to see to see how we could translate this differently in our work with textiles.” The quilts are design pieces that are meant to be used. “They really come to life after you wash them,” explains Johnson. “Since they’re all cotton, you can wash them as much as you want.”
This quilt is 100% cotton, so it can be washed on a gentle setting and tumble dryed low.
Be sure to use cold water for the first wash, so that the colors can set.
