Tall porcelain serving bowl for salads and side dishes. Handmade in Sydney, Australia. Tinted porcelain clay creates a depth of color. Matte porcelain exterior with glazed interior. Microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. Also available in Grey. (
Delicate and nuanced, these handmade and hand-glazed porcelain serving bowls have the unexpected strength of vitrified stoneware, and are safe for use in the microwave, oven and dishwasher. The bowls are made with Limoge hard-paste porcelain sourced directly from France (this material dates back to 1771 and was made popular by Marie Antoinette). The clay mixture is poured into molds and fired at an extremely high temperature of 2552°F (1400°C), which results in a durability comparable to earthenware or stoneware. Each piece boasts a deep, resonant color that is achieved not only by surface glazes, but allover tinting of the porcelain clay. This thorough, uniform color means that any chips that are sustained will not disrupt the aesthetic of the piece. The matte finish of the raw porcelain on the exterior contrasts with a glossy, glazed, food safe interior to create textural and visual interest for your daily dining, when setting a side of roasted vegetables on the family dinner table or filling the bowl with chips for your next party.
Safe for use in microwave, oven and dishwasher. Hot dishware should be handled with cloth, and rested on a trivet. Sudden changes in temperature (from freezer to oven, for instance) is likely to cause thermal shock, which will damage your porcelain. To avoid glaze scratches, we suggest storing your porcelain with linen or felt between each bowl.
An admirer of fine French porcelain, Shelley Simpson founded Mud Australia in order to translate the delicate material into an aesthetic that honors the landscape and history of her Australian homeland. “Every item I design is primarily for our family and friends and the relaxed style of living we have here in Sydney,” she explains. “I admire traditional ceramic design but it wouldn’t feel honest to be making that here.” The inspiration for the color schemes and simple shapes of her porcelain wares comes from the natural sun-drenched environment that surrounds Sydney, Australia. Simpson goes to the studio everyday to create her line of dinnerware by hand, along with the help of 15 professional ceramicists.
