The debut issue of Nourished Journal takes root in the natural world, from cooking with herbs to decorating with flowers to grooming with plant-based products. The Australian publication explores how to bring a sense of grounding and balance into our everyday lives. Edition One. 112 pages. (
The very first issue of Nourished Journal takes a holistic approach to the lifestyle publication, including food and nutrition, health and wellbeing, and travel and beauty. A taste of what’s inside: a how-to on preserving herbs, an exploration of Australian surf mecca Byron Bay, an interview with Lauri Kranz of Edible Gardens L.A., and a recipe for Lavender Lemon Granita.
Editor Amber Hourigan gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the magazine.

Why did you start Nourished?
Nourished was born out of my desire to read a publication in this same genre. Don’t get me wrong; there is no shortage of publications in the lifestyle sector, but none spoke to me. I also wanted to read a publication that was design driven and contemporary, something we strive to do with all of our titles, as again, that was something I saw was lacking in this genre.
The first piece we put together for the journal was an interview with eco goddess Shiva Rose. People often associate living a holistic lifestyle with certain stereotypes, and I think Shiva, whilst she does embrace the holistic, also knows that it doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to luxury. She also has such an inspiring story to tell, and is a wealth of knowledge. It was such a pleasure to meet her and conduct the interview personally.
Who are your readers?
Our readers are anyone who is interested in being inspired and creating their most positive life. It doesn’t matter how dedicated they are to living a holistic lifestyle, because there always has to be balance, but I do hope everyone can take something positive away from it.
Hardest story to get off the ground?
Our travel features can be rather challenging, but also some of the most rewarding. Logistics and weather play big roles, so putting all the pieces together can be difficult. For the feature we did on Queenstown in our second edition, we were to go out in a helicopter into the mountains and perform a few landings, one on a glacier peak. The weather leading up to our flight had not been very cooperative, so the helicopters had been grounded for five days. We only had 48 hours on the ground to get all the photography done for the feature, so it was an anxious wait. Luckily for us we got the call on the morning of our flight that the conditions were perfect!
What is a story you have yet to tell but would like to?
I’m constantly inspired by people and the world we live in, so I’m not sure I will ever have a definitive answer on this one. However, I would love to travel to India; my mother has been multiple times, and I have an interest in Ayurvedic principals. It’s such a fascinating culture, and they really are pioneers in living a holistic, balanced and conscious life.
