This wooden shot glass highlights the natural wood grain of the Castor Aralia trees it is carved from. The designer dubbed it the kami cup, after the Japanese word for paper, because of its feather-light weight. The family woodshop that produces the shot glass sources the lumber from the forests surrounding Hokkaido, which is the northernmost region in Japan. Using proprietary carving and shaping techniques, hefty blocks of wood are methodically whittled down to the thin, smooth walls of this shot glass. Several layers of food-safe urethane are applied by hand to protect the wood, ensuring that you can imbibe any beverage you like—from a morning matcha green tea shot to a nightcap of bourbon.

Use & Care

The food-grade polyurethane coating makes this glass suitable for daily use. Hand wash in warm soapy water and dry immediately. Do not leave soaking in water or place in dishwasher.

Production & Design

The ultra lightweight wooden shot glass is the brainchild of Oji Masanori, a Japanese designer who has received numerous awards for his household objects. After the thorny Castor Aralia trees are harvested, select sections of lumber are chosen, and each piece of wood is dried and seasoned for six months to a year.

Then the able-handed wood turners at the Takahashi Kougei workshop carve the dried lumber into cylinder blocks. These blocks are hollowed out with a unique whittling technique, and the contours are sanded smooth. The Takahashi family, who has been operating their workshop since 1965, carefully guards their secret carving method.
