The mint julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938. The drinks were originally served in pewter so that the crushed ice could create an appealing frost on the outside of the cup during warm spring days.

Unlike other metals and alloys, pewter (made up mostly of tin) requires very little upkeep. It doesn’t tarnish like silver or bronze. In fact, it looks better with use, as oils from our hands bring out the natural sheen and tone of the pewter.

Use & Care

Serve mint julep with crushed ice. Hold the cup from the bottom or the top to allow the condensation to create a frost on the pewter.

To prevent scratching, store pewter in original wrapping. Hand wash only, using mild, soapy water and a soft towel. Do not place in dishwasher.

Production & Design

Based out of Maryland, this family-run and operated firm has been creating household wares and gift items out of pewter and sterling silver since 1979. Their pewter formula is a lead-free alloy of metals comprised of 93% tin and a 7% mixture of antimony (a shiny grey metalloid), copper and bismuth (a silvery white metal often tinged with hues of pink that was chosen to replace lead as it has the same density but none of the poisons). This formula reaches back to 18th-century Great Britain.

Training to become a pewtersmith can take 10 years or more, and the skilled craftsmen at this American firm create their pewter cups using traditional spinning techniques, wherein a flat disk of pewter is clamped into the spinner’s lathe and gently formed into a vessel.
