Following principals of the “Super Normal” as outlined by Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukasawa, former MIT-trained engineer-turned-designer Jarrod Beglinger is inspired by everyday, humble objects and seeks to create pieces that are elegant in their simplicity. The idea for this step stool came about when he saw an old and charming yet poorly made foot stool at a friend’s home. The 10º Step stool reimagines the dilapidated antique with richly grained, salvaged white oak and sturdy joinery by Paul Morrison, a wood craftsman in Oregon, Wisconsin.

Five pieces go into the making of this simple and elegant wood stepstool: a top bench and four legs. They are brought together by mortise and tenon joints, a tried and true method dating back to ancient Egypt and China. An angled hanging slot on the bench allows for convenient wall storage. (The step stool sits flush against the wall if hung on an angled nail). The 10º angle is a running theme throughout the piece, from the canter of the legs, to the slant of the hanging slot, to the sides of the joints.

Use & Care

Keep away from moisture. Dust with soft cloth periodically. If desired, a beeswax or linseed oil furniture wax can be buffed in once every 1-5 years.

Exposure to sunlight will change the color of the wood over time. This will not harm the integrity of the wood.

Production & Design

Born, raised and based in Wisconsin, Jarrod received an engineering degree from MIT and a master’s in design from Design Academy Eindhoven, Netherlands. After a five-year position for a leading bicycle manufacturer, Jarrod decided to pursue his interest in design and craftsmanship. For every item he designs, Jarrod spends time creating several prototypes. After the prototypes are perfected, he then partners with local manufacturers and woodworkers to create the final product.
