Vegetable-tanned leather with wax sealant along interior to hold the bag’s form while keeping a relaxed aesthetic. Zippered opening and side gussets keep all your documents in place. Measures 19 ½ x 5 inches. Made in L.A. by Stephen Kenn. (
This handmade leather briefcase arrives looking and feeling like a well-loved heirloom. This is no coincidence: the bag's designer Stephen Kenn intended for his pieces to be passed down to future generations.
All the edges of the briefcase are finished on a burnishing wheel, creating smooth trims and a well-traveled, broken-in look. The reverse, or “flesh side,” of the soft leather is first stained with an olive drab tone, then finished with hot wax. This special treatment not only helps the bag to retain its shape without the aid of any cardboard or plastic stabilizers, it also eliminates the need for a lining – usually the first thing to get dirty or torn.
The heavy-duty zipper is made by Riri, a zipper and textile manufacturer widely respected in the fashion and accessories world. All seams are sewn using bonded nylon thread with a singed and melted finish, leaving no loose ends on your everyday commute or longer trips.
The side gussets keep the soft leather briefcase intact even when you fully unzip it. This construction helps to keep all your belongings in place, so that nary a loose page will drift away in the wind. There are no pockets on the inside of the briefcase. Instead, the maker encourages people to use soft, zip-top organizers. The idea behind this bag-within-a-bag concept is to extend the life cycle of the bag, as it will get worn in rather than worn out.
Over time and with use, the leather will take on a unique patina. If desired, condition with neatsfoot oil or our Beeswax Leather Conditioner.
Artist and designer Stephen Kenn moved from his native Canada to pursue a career in denim and leather accessories design in Los Angeles. He started his own line when an industry friend let him in on a little known secret: a stockpile of leftover fabrics and textiles from World War II was ferreted away in a downtown warehouse. Awed by this discovery, Stephen visited the warehouse several times, sitting atop a mountain of surplus material and pondering the war heroes that once donned these garments. Eventually, he was inspired to create a line of minimal, comfortable furniture using these recycled fabrics. His product line has now expanded to include bags and accessories, which also pay homage to military aesthetics.
