Vegetable-tanned leather Dopp kit with wax sealant along the interior to hold the bag’s form while keeping a relaxed aesthetic. Side buckle straps double as handles for easy carry. Designed and produced entirely in Los Angeles by Stephen Kenn. (
This leather Dopp kit with belted accents is meant to be passed down to future generations, according to its designer and maker, Stephen Kenn.
The reverse, or “flesh side,” of the soft leather is first stained with an olive drab tone, then finished with hot wax. This special treatment not only helps the bag to retain its shape without the aid of any cardboard or plastic stabilizers, it also eliminates the need for a lining – usually the first thing to get dirty or torn.
The heavy-duty zipper is made by Riri, a zipper and textile manufacturer widely respected in the fashion and accessories worlds. The bottom features a heavier, five-ounce leather to better withstand regular wear and tear. All seams are sewn using bonded nylon thread with a singed and melted finish, leaving no loose ends during your travels.
The Dopp Kit takes its name after its inventor, Charles Doppelt, a leather craftsman and immigrant to the United States. The toiletry bag gained prevalence after being issued to millions of American military recruits during World War II. After the war, these roomy grooming cases continued to find favor among soldiers and civilian men and women alike.
Over time and with use, the leather will take on a unique patina. If desired, condition with neatsfoot oil or our Beeswax Leather Conditioner.
Artist and designer Stephen Kenn moved from his native Canada to pursue a career in denim and leather accessories design in Los Angeles. He started his own line when an industry friend let him in on a little known secret: a stockpile of leftover fabrics and textiles from World War II was ferreted away in a downtown warehouse. Awed by this discovery, Stephen visited the warehouse several times, sitting atop a mountain of surplus material and pondering the war heroes that once donned these garments. Eventually, he was inspired to create a line of minimal, comfortable furniture using these recycled fabrics. His product line has now expanded to include bags and accessories, which also pay homage to military aesthetics.
