Stainless Steel Stovetop Espresso Maker - Kaufmann Mercantile

This stainless steel espresso maker is standard on every Italian stovetop. The concentrated coffee is created using a steam-pressure method, where water boils through a filter filled with fine coffee grinds into a canister above. The espresso is poured directly from this canister into your cup, as a morning ritual or as an after-dinner demitasse.

Use & Care

When you are ready to make your espresso, unscrew the canister from its base. Remove the filter, and fill it with finely ground coffee. Fill the base with water, just to below where the small valve is on the side of the base. Replace the coffee-filled filter in the base and securely screw the canister back on. Place the espresso maker directly onto a stovetop burner, turned to medium-low heat. As the water in the base is brought to a boil, it will process through the coffee grinds in the filter and up through the pipe in the center of the canister. Once all the water has boiled through, turn off the heat, pour your espresso out of the canister and enjoy.

To clean the espresso maker, wash all parts thoroughly by hand. Be sure not to leave the espresso maker on a warm burner after the coffee is made. Take care to place the coffee maker on the side of the burner so that the handle is not directly over the heating element.

Production & Design

This espresso maker was made in Italy by Isla, a company that was founded as an aluminum press-works in 1946. They began making stainless steel household products a decade later, and their designs quickly became iconic standards in kitchens throughout Italy. To create this espresso maker, a team of skilled artisans takes a sheet of stainless steel through a process of pressing, bending, soldering, trimming, and polishing until all the components are in place to the artisan’s specifications.
