Hand-cranked pepper mill with solid cast iron construction and walnut wood lid. Completely cast iron grinding mechanism is extremely durable. Walnut wood lid easily attaches and detaches with a strong magnet. Made in Sweden since 1906. (
The grinding mechanism of this Swedish-made pepper mill is constructed entirely from cast iron, and will last for generations, unlike plastic counterparts. The designer conducted several trials before landing on just the right gauge to grind optimally sized flakes of pepper to top off poached eggs or dishes of pasta. The lid of the grinder is hewn from handsome walnut wood, and is ergonomically shaped to be comfortable in the palm when cranked. A strong magnet keeps the lid securely attached—it stays in place even when one is holding the 3 pound mill just by the walnut lid—but a purposeful tug opens the mill so pepper can be refilled.
Remove lid with a strong sturdy pull, placing one hand on the cast iron body and the other on the wood lid. Place pepper in cast iron reservoir. Replace lid. Do not put salt or other spices in the grinder, as this grinder is specially designed for whole peppercorns.
Hand wash only using mild soap and a soft brush. Do not place in dishwasher.
Setting themselves apart from mass-produced, disposable goods, Swedish company Skeppshult has been in operation since 1906, and continues to make their cast iron products by hand, according to ancient methods and traditions.
All of their products start with raw iron along with other metals in carefully controlled amounts. The metal is heated to 2732 °F (1500 °C) in induction furnaces powered by electricity from wind and hydropower.
The molten iron is cast in special molds, made from compressed, specially formulated sand—one of the few materials that can withstand the extreme temperatures. The two halves of the sand molds are then pressed together, creating the cavity in which the molten iron is poured by hand by an expert casting master.
When the cast iron has cooled, the mold halves are separated and recycled to produce another mold (sand molds can be used only once and therefore each product is unique; no two are exactly alike). The cast iron object then goes through hand grinding and blasting to produce the proper structure. Finally, the surface is seasoned with rapeseed oil, which protects the cast iron from external damage and creates a non-stick surface.
