The peshtemal, or Turkish bath towel, is a lightweight textile that has its origins in the hamam, or Turkish baths. These diaphanous fabrics were used in daily life to wrap the body in the hamam, as well as for ceremonial rituals. When you are stepping out of the bath or shower, drying off with this plush textile will become a welcome ritual. Each towel is made of 100% cotton, and is highly absorbent. The artisan that hand loomed these towels has named the diamond weave texture “Baklava,” after the decadent Turkish dessert. The hand-knotted trim adds a simple decorative finish to the towel.

Use & Care

Pull the knots on the fringe of the towel before washing for the first time to ensure that they are tightly knotted. Before first use, the towel can be placed in cold water for 12 hours to strengthen the fibers and increase absorption, while reducing the possibility of shrinkage. After the soaking, wash in cold water. For subsequent washes, wash the towel in warm water with similar colors. Do not use fabric softener on this textile as buildup and residue decreases absorption.

Production & Design

As a child, Tara Strategier developed a love for Turkish heritage and handmade goods during her family’s annual trips to Turkey from the Netherlands. In 1997, Strategier, along with her husband Maarten ten Böhmer, started to sell Turkish goods they had sourced on travels together from their living room. The couple now sells Turkish goods from a storefront in Haarlem, Netherlands.
