Umbrella with Maple Wood Handle (Grey) - Kaufmann Mercantile

The wide canopy of this classic umbrella provides protection from heavy showers and slight spring sprinkles. Made by a third generation umbrella-maker in rainy Vancouver, Canada, the umbrella’s design has remained unchanged for decades. The rich-grain maple wood handle feels solid and smooth in your palm, while its wide curve hooks easily into the crook of your arm. The top of the umbrella’s maple wood stick is protected from damage with a steel cap, called a ferrule. Each rib is finished with a maple wood tip, and a snap-close tie keeps the umbrella’s ribs contained when closed. Steel springs make for simple opening and closing when entering doorways. The deep grey hue in the cotton canopy makes a fair match for the cloudy sky above.

Use & Care

When opening your umbrella, take care that you do not bump into people or structures nearby. After use, leave the umbrella open to dry. Because of the cotton in the canopy, this umbrella will take a slightly longer time to dry than polyester-canopied umbrellas, about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the strength of the shower.

The manufacturer will make repairs to the umbrella during its lifespan, stitching ripped seams back together and replacing bent frames that become damaged on particularly blustery days.

Production & Design

This family-run umbrella business originally began in the 1920s, when Jewish immigrant Isadore Flader began repairing umbrella frames door-to-door in Toronto, Canada. After re-locating to the drizzly city of Vancouver, he opened a repair and retail shop in in 1935, The business was later taken over by Isadore’s sons Charlie, Norman, and Samuel, and is currently run by Charlie’s children, Corry and Glen. These umbrellas are made on the original machinery from the 1950s, by a two-person team of seamstress and rib-maker.
